“Promises, Promises” was adapted from “The Apartment”, Billy Wilder’s Academy Award-winning film. Featuring a score by Burt Bacharach with lyrics by Hal David and a book by the great Neil Simon, the musical opened in New York, at the Shubert Theatre on December,1 1968 and ran on Broadway for three years ( 1281 performances). Less then one year later, on October,2 1969, it opened in Londres, at the Prince of Wales Theatre (560 performances).
Except for minor deviations, the story line in this musical follows closely the one in the movie and it was a revealing look at what it takes to get ahead in the business world .
SYNOPSIS: Chuck is young, ambitious, likeable, charming and a bachelor who works for the Consolidated Life Insurance Company whose chief executives use his apartment for extra curricular amatory pursuits. Mr Dobitch – Mortgages and Loans Dept – borrows Chuck’s keys, and apartment against the promise of rapid promotion within the company. But it is not only Mr Dobitch who borrows the apartment: one executive after another also borrow it – and all with the same promise of advancement within the company. And he finally gets promoted when the key arrives to J.D.Sheldrake, the personnel director. But at Christmas Eve, Chuck finds out that Sheldrake’s paramour is Fran Kubelik, a waitress in the company restaurant; a girl whom Chuck has admired from a distance and is deeply in love with. Fran is dumped by Sheldrake and she tries to commit suicide in Chuck’s bedroom. His neighbour, Dr. Dreyfuss saves her life but suspects that Chuck was the cause of the suicide attempt. Fran recovers at Chuck’s and starts reciprocating his feelings. Meanwhile, Miss Olsen, Sheldrake’s secretary and former mistress, decides to acquaint his wife about his affairs. When Sheldrake tries to resume his affair with Fran, and meets Chuck to sort things out regarding the use of the apartment, he is given the keys, not to the apartment but to the executive bathroom. It’s New Year’s Eve and Chuck is determined to leave his apartment forever, but just before midnight Fran arrives andÖChuck finds out he has better things to do than work at Consolidated Life Insurance Company – playing cards at New Year with Fran for instance!
“Promises,Promises”-“Promesse Promesse”(translated into Italian by Giorgio Calabrese) opened in Italy on August,3 2002 at La Versiliana, starring Maria Laura Baccarini (Fran Kubelik) and Gianluca Guidi (C.C.Baxter). The director J.Dorelli had played Chuck Baxter in 1970, when “Promises,Promises” was first staged in Italy.
